September Reflection

This month, I went to Roice Hurst as before. In all honestly, Roice Hurst sometimes doesn't seem very grateful for the volunteers that come and help in the facility. However, we went and spent time with the dogs and then also went and socialized with the cats because those are the animals that receive the least amount of attention.

August Reflection

This month, I turned in the accumulation of all my CAS reflections to my CAS coordinator. This was due to make sure that we were not slacking off and that we were actually making progress in our CAS projects.

July Reflection

This month I finished getting rid of the leftover items from the sale. Anything that Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity, or Salvation Army did not take, we took to the dump. Everything is gone now and it feels great! This month we also took the check into Roice-Hurst. The cashier check that I took care of at the bank was for 1,656. However, along with all the checks that people made out when the bought items at the sale, the total came to 1,891! It was pretty exciting, and they were very grateful. We then were able to play with the kittens at the shelter.

June Reflection

Well, the sale was last weekend and it went wonderful! It was so much more work than I anticipated, and I am super glad it is over. We raised 1800 dollars for Roice-Hurst Humane Society! As far as the sale, on Friday we started loading furniture at 5 am and hauling it over to the church. We had to recruit another truck to help move furniture at Abby's house but it worked out great. We had everything out and on tables by 8:30 when we were supposed to start our sale, however, people were looking at things as early as 7 am. Everything that didn't sell on Saturday we donated to Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity, and anything those organizations wouldn't take, we hauled to the dump. Also, we had a man named Tim come down late Saturday after the sale and allowed him to take as many items as he wanted for free because he is doing the same thing we just did in September. If felt good to know that we helped out Roice-Hurst through another sale. I am glad this is over, but I'm very amazing at how successful it was. I am very proud of my group and I, and I am very pleased to learn our own strength when being put in charge of something this big. We will continue to visit Roice-Hurst through April of 2015 for our monthly reflections. Overall, my group and I worked collaboratively to make this sale very successful.

May Reflection

This month we collected about 5 more donations. It was a very big challenge when contacting all the contributors and attempting to find a time when we could all meet and haul the donations. Another new challenge is finding room for the increasing donations, but we are packing things away in an organized way. We are very happy with the results and we are gathering a lot of unique and profitable items. Yesterday, we filled the truck with everything from furniture to clothing from 3 different donations. My neighbor, who is helping his church with a yard sale they are putting on, said that next week after the last day of their sale, my group could come by and take all the leftovers and use them for our sale. I then called one of my dad's friends and asked him if we could use his trailer and he gladly said yes. So next week sometime we are going to go to that yard sale and get a whole bunch of great things for our rummage sale! Shannon Freed, the events director at Roice Hurst, has also been keeping in touch with me to help get the word out about the sale. She has been a great help. We have run into a bit of a storing problem as all three of our houses (mine, Abby's, and Karen's) are almost full, however we decided to just start making room since it is less than a month before the sale.

April Reflection

After I contacted Shannon Freed, the event coordinator at Roice Hurst, she sent out an email to all her volunteers telling them of our rummage sale. This was a great first step to get the word out there. We have already had 4 people call with donations in a matter of 2 weeks! The first lady gave us clothes, CD's, and picture frames (she said she is going to collect more things too). Then a lady called us and told us she had some mattresses and other things for our sale. When we got there, we found out that she had a ton of stuff and we ended up having to take 3 trips, but we got a lot of great things including the 2 mattresses, clothes, cabinets, 2 tvs, and a sink. We are setting up a time to go collect things from the other people who called as well. At this pace, we will have a lot of great things for the sale and I am very pleased with how it is going. Below is a picture of some of the items that we have collected that are being stored at our houses.

March Reflection

As part of the plan, I called Shannon Freed who is the director of events for Roice Hurst Humane Society. I just touched base with her and informed her of what we were doing for their organization. She was very thankful and said that she would contact Judi (who works at Roice Hurst) and set up a place on their website where they will advertise our rummage sale. We also made a few flyers to start bringing in donations which she wanted, so I emailed them to her. She said that she will call or text me with questions so we could get the process moving faster. This month was successful because we are finally putting things into action and getting the process moving. We have developed a plan and have begun to initiate activities such as the gathering of donations and getting the word about the rummage sale out there.

February Reflection

This month we went to the humane society and volunteered again. We helped socialize with and groom the cats and then we helped walked the dogs. Also, after consulting with our CAS adviser, we met with the manager of Roice Hurst and informed her with what we are doing. She then gave us the number of the organization's event organizer who handles donating services. We are planning on getting our rummage sale perfectly planned out, with dates and such, and then we are going to give her a call next month.

January Reflection

We went to Roice Hurst this month. We also started planning how we are going to pick up items. We decided we would make flyers and take them around each of our neighborhoods with our phone numbers on them. This will take place sometime in the next month.
