This blog is dedicated to my group's IB CAS project for 2013-2015. We will be volunteering two to three hours a month at Roice Hurst Humane Society and documenting our learning experiences on this page through photos, videos, and written reflections. Summer 2014 we will host a rummage sale of collected donations. The proceeds will be given to Roice Hurst Humane Society.

January Reflection
We are working on taking on another small project at the shelter. I contacted Shannon and she gave me the name and number of a person at the shelter who could help us with this. I called her, and she never called me back. Committed, I called her again a week later, and she answered. She said that she had one project that they actually just finished. She also said that they wanted to extend the cat room around the side of the building but is not sure when this would take place. She assured me she would ask the staff and get back to me in a day or so. She has yet to call, but I'm going to give her a few more days and then call again. I noticed, through the journey of this CAS project, that I have developed a strong new skill for contacting people. Sending texts or emailing is an easy way, however I was able to call them on the phone or set up meetings which I believe is a skill that will benefit me in the future.

December Reflection
In light of the conversations with our advisers last month, we decided to contact Roice-Hurst to see if they needed help with any other projects associated with the organization. I first contacted Shannon Freed in which she responded: "Hi Liz! The Roice-Hurst shelter manager, Dorothy McClure, has come up with a project for you. They have the materials for our small isolation room, but could use your help fixing it up. You can contact her directly to find out more details & set up a date. Her cell number is 970-433-0335. Thanks again & Happy New Year!" We will be contacting her next month and hopefully begin this project.
November Reflection
This month we had a CAS meeting with our entire IB class. Our advisers reviewed all the requirements in order to fulfill the CAS requirements to get the IB diploma. We reviewed what our projects have accomplished so far and how much work and reflection we need to be doing in between now and May.
October Reflection
This month we went to the shelter. They now have a new rule that prohibits people from volunteering until they complete a class. This is very frustrating because we have been volunteering there for almost a year and now they want us to do extra work just to socialize with cats and walk dogs. The issue is that there are only a small options for the class, none of which I can attend due to other commitments. However, we were still able to look at the dogs and pet some of the cats this month.
